Buenavista Cay Anchorage
22° 26.0′ N · 75° 50.1′ W
A huge bank-side bay along Buenavista (Bonavista) Cay with a long beach, the ruins of Edwards' farmhouse ashore, excellent snorkelling and wide views down the chain.
Practical
ActiveCaptain 'Buena Vista Cay': approach from the bank side. Huge anchorage with some coral heads; too close in there is rubble, too far out rock and coral. MV Privateer found good sand in a wide band from about 6 to 10 ft at low water, and used the NE-corner pocket in NE-E winds; noforeignland (4.4) warns of rocky patches and limited reliable holding, so dive the anchor. Some swell wraps round but it is usually comfortable. A 2011 charter yacht anchored in about 11 ft, open to the north. Shore is a bit rocky but you can land a dinghy. Many sharks because fishing boats anchor nearby.
Best for
Mid-chain stop with hiking and snorkelling
Season
Dec–May; best Mar–May between fronts; leave or move to a front refuge before W–N winds
