Koh Siray Shipyards and Phuket River

7° 50.8′ N · 98° 24.8′ E

The Tha Chin River between Phuket Town and Koh Siray is lined with fishing-boat yards that also slip keelboats, for budget hauls and long refits. Ratanachai Slipway, the biggest local yard, takes vessels up to 52 m and 210 tons.

Practical

Entrance: a drying bank and a constantly shifting channel; enter on the three-quarter rising tide, ideally behind a large fishing boat. Pass north of Koh Taphao Noi to the first channel marker, then to the second buoy and the headland east of the river mouth. Moored boats narrow the channel, and the Laem Tukkae light is not advised for night approaches (SEAP). Yards: Ratanachai Slipway, just inside the entrance (52 m, 210 t; bow depth 1.95 m, stern 3.95 m; enter at high tide only; full services) and Asian Phuket Marine and Dockyard, further up on the right before the bridge (slipway to 40 m, big concrete hardstand, Thai-speaking staff, alongside wharf at the river mouth). Book cradles ahead and send the foreman a photo or plan of the underwater hull. Diesel in quantity, water, ice and provisions at the fishing port; Rassada ferry terminal (Phi Phi, Krabi) is on the west side of the entrance.
