Laem Tukkae Chao Lay Village (Koh Siray)

7° 52.5′ N · 98° 25.1′ E · approximate

Phuket's largest sea-gypsy settlement, an Urak Lawoi fishing village of stilt houses and longtails at Laem Tukkae on Koh Siray, the island joined to Phuket Town by a causeway. It is a working village, not an attraction.

Practical

Position approximate, from the OSM viewpoint node on Soi Laem Tukkae beside the village. The Urak Lawoi have held Thai citizenship since the early 1960s and hold the Loy Rua boat-launching festival in the 6th and 11th lunar months (Phuket 101). Walk slowly, greet people and ask before taking photos. Wat Koh Siray on the hill has a large reclining Buddha and good views; the muddy seabed means there is no swimming.
