Koh Hong North Anchorage (Krabi)

8° 4.9′ N · 98° 40.7′ E

The anchorage off the hong entrance on the north side of Krabi's Koh Hong, a sheer limestone island about 10 nm northwest of Ao Nang. You lie under the cliffs with the lagoon, a silica-sand beach and a bat cave all within dinghy reach.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot waypoint 08°04.896N 98°40.707E. Good holding in 15-20 m; some National Park moorings, which the Pilot recommends over anchoring (deep water close in, so use a light anchor and rope for a day stop). In the SW monsoon an uncomfortable ground swell wraps around the eastern headland. The hong entrance is a short dinghy hop across a shallow reef that needs more than 2 m of tide. Gill nets are sometimes strung across the entrance on the ebb. Park entry 300 THB per foreign adult, 100 THB per child (Than Bok Khorani National Park, per TAT as cited by the Pilot; verify locally). No fuel, water or provisions.

Best for

Overnight base for the Koh Hong lagoon on a park mooring

Season

Nov-Apr (NE monsoon); rolly in SW swell
