Ao Talo Palien West Bay Anchorage, Koh Rawi

6° 32.9′ N · 99° 10.8′ E · approximate

The bay on the far side of Koh Rawi's western isthmus, ringed by huge granite boulders — an overnight spot in the NE monsoon and a lunch stop in all but strong westerlies.

Practical

Moorings Siam cruising guide (Ko Rawi section): further west of the main Rawi anchorage is a lovely bay surrounded by huge granite boulders, suitable overnight in the NE season and as a lunch stop in all but the strongest westerly winds. Southeast Asia Pilot: day anchorage mid-bay on the other side of the isthmus in 10-14 m, with snorkelling. Position approximate: the OpenStreetMap label for Ao Talo Palien bay (in the water, about 200 m off the beach); we take this to be the bay both guides describe, from the island outline. Strong current around Rawi's west end. Thailandmagazine names a King's Beach on Rawi's west side, after King Rama III. The Moorings guide is undated, states its GPS positions are on the Indian 1975 datum (not WGS84) and says to anchor only on sand: it quotes fines of US$1,000 to US$15,000 for anchoring on coral (verify locally). Park fee and the Adang–Rawi seasonal closure apply (see those entries).
