Isla Mitlán Anchorage (Isla Coronado / Isla Smith)

29° 4.3′ N · 113° 31.1′ W

A wedge of water between the rock of Isla Mitlán and the volcanic bulk of Isla Coronado (Smith) — stunning walls, fantastic snorkeling and grouper, and a notorious bug population.

Practical

Do NOT enter via the channel south of Mitlán — scattered shallow rocky shoals. Round the northern point of Mitlán and anchor in the mostly sand area to the N/NE in 20-30 ft, good holding in soft sand; dark patches mid-channel are rock — if you can't see the bottom, stay toward the north. Protected E, S, W. Bees in the dry season and jejenes (no-see-ums) when the breeze drops. Strong currents around the Coronado islands. Pebble beaches; trail/scramble up the volcano. Sea lion colony on nearby Isla Calavera.
