Canal de Ballenas Fin Whales
29° 15.0′ N · 113° 33.6′ W · approximate
The deep, current-ripped channel between Baja and Ángel de la Guarda is named for its whales — the Gulf's unusual resident fin whales feed here year-round.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate, mid-channel. Fin whales in the Gulf of California do not migrate annually; the channel is part of the Bahía de los Ángeles biosphere reserve that protects them. Slow down near whales, keep well off and never approach head-on. The channel's currents are strong — plan transits with the tide (see the Canal de Ballenas passage).
