Fort James

17° 7.8′ N · 61° 51.8′ W

The 18th-century fort on the north point of St John's Harbour, with a popular local public beach beside it.

Practical

Fort James was the colony's main harbour defence; in the 1770s planters realized it could not protect ships at anchor and built Fort Barrington opposite (NPA). The beach next to it is a locally popular public beach close to town (tourism board). Reach by taxi from St John's or dinghy from the harbour anchorage in calm weather.
