Fort Barrington
17° 7.8′ N · 61° 53.2′ W
A half-moon fort of the 1770s on Goat Hill, the headland at the south-west corner of St John's Harbour, reached by a short steep path from Deep Bay beach with views over the harbour and anchorage.
Practical
Originally Goat Hill Fort, renamed in 1779 after Admiral Barrington (AMG). It later served as a signal station and briefly mounted a Royal Navy quick-firing gun in 1917. Fort Barrington National Park (2009) includes the fort, a small Amerindian site and the Andes wreck (NPA). The walk is short but steep and exposed: go early or late.
Best for
