Tearavero Village Anchorage (Kauehi)

15° 49.3′ S · 145° 7.0′ W

A sand-and-bommie shelf off Tearavero, Kauehi's only village, on the NE rim of a 320 km² lagoon. The tall coral-block church is your landmark, and the village has three or four small magasins, a snack, a post office and the mairie.

Practical

Position is s/v Yolo's 'middle anchorage' (June 2011): 22 ft (about 7 m), sand with a few coral heads. Yolo describes three pockets west of the village, each with a reef to its north and south. The western one lies directly off the village; jog around its northern reef to the middle one; jog around the next reef to anchor north of the village. All three give good protection from N, NE, E, SE and S. The southern pocket is closest to the village, but the supply-ship barge throws a lot of wake. Pick the northern pocket if you expect a big blow from NE through S (Yolo). In April 2019 Jacaranda anchored off the village in 28-30 ft on clear sand with no bommies nearby. Moon Rebel (Nov 2018) rated the area just N/NE of the village a good tuck-up for heavy weather. The anchorage is open across the whole lagoon to winds with a westerly component. Approach: from inside the pass (about 15°56.93'S 145°10.62'W) the lagoon is deep (70+ ft) with scattered reefs that are easy to see in good light. Keep the sun high and avoid the pearl-spat buoys near the village. Yolo's route from the SE corner ran via 15°50.10'S 145°07.25'W, with one jog around a large reef. The 6-7 environment-service moorings sit in this anchorage (see Kauehi Moorings). Dinghy to the 200 m concrete wharf just west of the church. On supply-ship days, pull the dinghy onto the beach north of the wharf. Float your chain. Security: in April 2018 a catamaran anchored 0.4 nm off, behind the mooring field, was boarded and robbed of jewellery and a speargun during the 8 am Sunday mass, so lock up when you go ashore (Noonsite). Vini cell signal good, internet very slow (2019).
