Kauehi Gendarmerie and Mairie

15° 49.4′ S · 145° 6.6′ W

The village town hall (mairie, renovated, originally built in 1884) and the OPT post office in Tearavero. This is where you report, pay any dues and ask about water and trash.

Practical

Coordinate is the mairie in OpenStreetMap; the post office is beside it. Face the church and turn left (north): the mairie, post office and, per the compendium, the gendarmerie are on the right. The 2019 government atoll sheet lists no municipal police officer on Kauehi, so ask at the mairie if no gendarme is present. Kauehi is not a port of entry: clear in at Rangiroa, the Marquesas, the Gambier or Papeete first. OPT post office: open 7:30-9 am Monday-Friday (2019), tel 40 96 90 20; Vini cell service available. Trash: in 2011 the village 'policeman' let cruisers use a steel barrel near the copra warehouse by the wharf. The 2019 sheet says there is no sorting and waste is buried or burned, so carry recyclables and batteries on to Fakarava or Tahiti. Kauehi belongs to the commune of Fakarava (associated commune), with a delegate mayor.
