Kauehi Moorings

15° 49.3′ S · 145° 7.0′ W · approximate

A small field of environment-service 'ecological moorings' off Tearavero village, laid for visiting yachts so they don't anchor on coral.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: Jacaranda (April 2019) says the moorings are in the 'middle anchorage' Yolo used, so the point is set about 0.1 nm east of Yolo's GPS position toward the village. Look for the balls on arrival. Jacaranda counted 6-7 moorings in 20-25 ft. The 2019 government atoll sheet lists 7 ecological moorings installed. Several locals confirmed that nobody has maintained them since they were installed. The Tuamotus Compendium warns that using unmaintained Kauehi, Aratika and Fakarava moorings is 'like playing Russian Roulette': dive on the mooring and inspect the loop, line, shackles and chain before trusting it, and don't leave the boat on one in a blow. No fee has been reported.
