Puerto Escocés Anchorage (Scottish Bay)

8° 49.9′ N · 77° 38.2′ W · approximate

A large, calm bay near the Colombian border, site of the failed late-1690s Scottish Darién colony and its Fort Saint Andrew, with a small Guna village, huts built over the shallows and friendly trading.

Practical

Coordinate approximate: the centre of the bay as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 21676253, Puerto Suggunyaa Inabiginya / Scottish Bay), about 390 m from any shore; anchor by eye. SV Wild Fox: keep to the south and east of Roca Escoses and stay mid-channel until the village bears abeam; three huts stand on the shallows some distance from shore, and he anchored SW of them. Coral and limestone extend north and south of the huts and the depth goes from 10 m to 10 cm without warning, so read the water colour. A $10 fee was collected quickly (more if not single-handed). noforeignland's 2025 community rates it 4.8 of 5: calm, good holding, peaceful, friendly locals and chances to trade, but small biting bugs at night and less-than-clear water. Continue west by the inside passage to Mulatupu only with careful pilotage.

Best for
