Isla Pinos (Tupbak) Anchorage & Island Walk

8° 59.8′ N · 77° 45.4′ W

A high, forested island with a village and sandy beaches near the Colombian end of the comarca; the walk right around it is described by cruisers as 'simply wonderful and enchanting', and its reef-free approach makes it a safe first landfall from Colombia.

Practical

Anchorage position 08°59.790'N 077°45.440'W, 7.5 m off a sandy beach before the sandspit and village; slightly south of the guide's anchorage for better shelter in NW winds (SY Balvenie 2012). SV Wild Fox: anchor off the prominent church, north of a small islet; too far north is shallow if the wind goes south, too far south is shallow if it goes north. Anchoring fee $10 for 30 days, collected by ulu with a receipt. Village guide 'David' offered fruit and an informal restaurant (2008–2012). Walk around the island: about three hours at a relaxed pace. Noonsite calls Isla Pinos a much safer anchorage than Puerto Obaldía. Iguana Island nearby is a lovely day stop when swell isn't hooking round.
