Cherokee Long Dock

26° 16.6′ N · 77° 3.1′ W · approximate

Cherokee's famous wooden pier, signed as the longest wooden dock in the Bahamas, built out across the very shallow sound so the mailboat and fishing boats could reach water deep enough to load - now the village's photo stop and a sunset walk.

Practical

Length is given as 770 ft (Rolling Harbour, 2016) or 700 ft (2014 guest post); both cite the plaque calling it the longest wooden dock/pier in the Bahamas. Since the paved road reached Cherokee it serves mainly as a visitor attraction. Coordinate is approximate: the midpoint of the longest pier OpenStreetMap shows at Cherokee (way 729401545, mapped Sept 28, 2019 just after Hurricane Dorian), which is only about 125 m (410 ft) long - it may be incomplete or partly lost; check on arrival. ActiveCaptain (Cherokee Point anchorage) notes the old mailboat dock and advises landing the dinghy on the beach. The sound is extremely shallow: come by dinghy from the Cherokee Point anchorage on a rising tide with the outboard tilted, or by road (30-45 minutes from Marsh Harbour).
