Rocher du Diamant Viewpoint (HMS Diamond Rock)

14° 27.3′ N · 61° 3.4′ W

The roadside lookout on Pointe du Diamant over the rock the Royal Navy famously commissioned as the 'stone frigate' HMS Diamond Rock in 1804.

Practical

Position is the 'Point de vue sur le Rocher du Diamant' mapped in OSM. History (Wikipedia): Commodore Samuel Hood's men hauled 18- and 24-pounder guns up the rock and garrisoned it with about 120 men. They harassed French shipping into Fort-de-France for 17 months until a Franco-Spanish squadron captured it in the Battle of Diamond Rock in mid-1805. Passing Royal Navy ships were said to salute the 'ship'. From the water, the classic photo is from the passage between the rock and Pointe du Diamant, but give the rock a wide berth because currents and gusts accelerate around it.
