Anse Cafard Slave Memorial (Cap 110, Le Diamant)

14° 27.9′ N · 61° 2.8′ W

Fifteen 2.5 m white reinforced-concrete busts stand in a tight triangle on the cliff at Anse Cafard, facing the Gulf of Guinea. They commemorate the 1830 wreck of an illegal slave ship on these rocks.

Practical

Position is from OSM (Mémorial Cap 110). The sculptor Laurent Valère made it for the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery (1998). The wreck happened in a violent storm in 1830, and only 86 of about 300 captives survived (France.fr). The figures face bearing 110° (east-south-east) towards Africa, hence 'Cap 110'. Access is free and open at all times. Car park at Anse Cafard, which is also the start of the Morne Larcher hike. Visitors warn of pickpocketing on the beach (Visorando comments).
