Flamenco Peninsula sooty tern colony
18° 20.3′ N · 65° 20.1′ W · approximate
Each summer tens of thousands of sooty terns nest on the Flamenco peninsula behind the beach: the largest colony in the Puerto Rico archipelago, loud and spectacular from the water.
Practical
Position is approximate: a point on the Flamenco peninsula west of the beach, inside the refuge (exact colony limits not published). FWS cites more than 30,000 pairs of sooty terns nesting on the Flamenco peninsula; Wikipedia's Flamenco Beach article says they nest in large numbers nearby each summer. Nesting areas are closed: watch from the beach or from a boat, keep dogs and drones away. The peninsula is also the unexploded-ordnance caution area (Coast Pilot): stay on the beach.
