Carlos Rosario Reef dive (Impact)

18° 19.6′ N · 65° 19.9′ W · approximate

A long, healthy fringing reef off Playa Carlos Rosario with huge sea fans, known to divers as 'Impact' from the Navy years; shallow enough for snorkellers and easy dives.

Practical

Position approximate: in the water about 170 m west of OpenStreetMap 'Playa Carlos Rosario' (way 426918363), where Moon describes the reef 'west of Playa Flamenco, past the ridge'; checked against OpenStreetMap coastline. Depths: about 30 ft (Aqua Adventure); the 'Impact Area' is listed by the Culebra Dive Shop as a shallow reef of 15 to 45 ft with big sea fans, blue chromis and trumpetfish (Tamarindo Estates, older page). Usually visited by dive boat (Culebra Divers) or by snorkelling from the beach. Take nothing; moor or anchor only on sand. Coast Pilot 5 (ch. 13): the Navy warns of unexploded ordnance on the northwest peninsula and in the immediate offshore vicinity, including Cayo Lobo, Los Gemelos, Cayo Ballena, Cayo Tiburón and Cayos Geniquí: never touch metal objects on the bottom.
