Flamenco Bay Anchorage

18° 19.9′ N · 65° 19.0′ W · approximate

A daytime anchorage in Bahía Flamenco off the famous beach; magnificent in calm weather but wide open to the north and to winter swells.

Practical

Position is the OpenStreetMap 'Bahía Flamenco' label (node 368381487), checked to be in water. The Virgintino guide (about 2015) gives an entrance waypoint of 18°20.30'N, 65°18.92'W and does not recommend Flamenco as an overnight anchorage: it is vulnerable to swells and northers; for a day visit anchor off the beach and watch the weather, as it is no place to be caught in a norther. Coast Pilot 5 (ch. 13): Bahía Flamenco is constricted by reefs, and the north coast lies within the 33 CFR 334.1460 danger zone (no longer used for firing) and the unexploded-ordnance caution area. Stay outside the buoyed swimming zone; anchor in sand only.
