Flamenco Beach Sherman Tanks
18° 20.0′ N · 65° 19.3′ W
Two rusting M4 Sherman tanks left on Flamenco Beach by the US Navy in 1975, now covered in graffiti: a startling reminder that this beach was a weapons range for over thirty years.
Practical
Position: OpenStreetMap 'Antiguo Tanque de Guerra' (node 3404834728); a second tank is mapped further northwest (node 4259646119 at 18.33467, -65.32276). Wikipedia: the Navy left the tanks in 1975 after using the area for weapons testing for more than 30 years. The Navy–Culebra protests (1970–75) ended the bombing here; a commemorative plaque for Flamenco Beach was commissioned in 2019 (Wikipedia). Walk along the beach to the west end.
