Unexploded ordnance caution area (Flamenco peninsula and NW cays)

18° 20.4′ N · 65° 20.3′ W · approximate

The legacy of 70 years of naval gunnery: live shells may still lie on the Flamenco peninsula, the northwest cays and nearby seabed, so certain shores are look-don't-touch.

Practical

Position is approximate, at the northwest peninsula. Coast Pilot 5 (ch. 13): the Navy advises unexploded ordnance is a hazard on the northwest peninsula north of a line between 18°19'55"N, 65°18'58"W and 18°19'31"N, 65°14'34"W and in the immediate offshore vicinity, including Cayo Lobo, Cayo Botijuela, Alcarraza, Los Gemelos, El Ancón, Piedra Stevens, Cayo Ballena, Cayo Tiburón, Cayos Geniquí and Cabo del Pasaje; exercise extreme caution. Do not anchor on, dive near, or touch any metal object; note its position and report it. The 33 CFR 334.1460 danger zone (Punta Resaca to Punta Tamarindo) is open to navigation except during firing, which Coast Pilot says ceased in 1975.
