Koh Ma Sandbar (Mae Haad)

9° 48.1′ N · 99° 58.8′ E

A small island tied to Mae Haad beach by a sandbar you can walk across at low tide, ringed by some of the best snorkelling and shallow diving on Phangan, with hard and soft corals, barracuda and moray eels.

Practical

Island position from Wikidata (Ko Ma). Wikivoyage describes Koh Ma as part of a national marine park and says you must swim out over a first, dead reef to reach the good coral; go in and out at high tide, because crossing the dead reef on a falling tide is difficult and painful. Sail Rock Divers lists Koh Ma as a local dive to 18 m, about 20 minutes by boat from Chaloklum or from the beach at Mae Haad, suitable for all levels. Dinghy from the Ao Mae Haad anchorage. No fishing or coral collecting.

Best for

Easy reef snorkel straight off the anchorage
