Mae Haad, Haad Salad and Haad Yao Reefs

9° 47.2′ N · 99° 58.2′ E · approximate

A string of fringing coral reefs along Phangan's northwest coast, giving long, relaxed shallow dives and snorkels straight from the beach or the anchored boat.

Practical

Position approximate: the OpenStreetMap bay node for Ao Haad Salad, the middle of the three reefs; the reefs run along the shore from Haad Yao north to Mae Haad. Chaloklum Diving: maximum about 14 m, long relaxed coral-reef dives with a nice range of hard corals and typical reef fish, good for beginner courses. Haad Yao Divers dive the Haad Yao house reef, a sloping reef directly off the beach at 5–20 m that is especially popular at night for bioluminescent plankton. Wikivoyage: the Haad Yao reef lies about 400 m off the beach, and jet-skis and day-trip boats run over it. Snorkel from the Haad Yao, Haad Salad or Mae Haad anchorages; fly a dive flag and watch for boat traffic. West-facing: best in the NE monsoon and calm weather.
