Ao Chaloklum Anchorage

9° 47.3′ N · 100° 0.2′ E

A deep, 3 km bay on Phangan's north coast framed by mountains, with a working fishing village at its head and the best all-round shelter on the north side.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot waypoint 09°47.340N 100°00.227E (anchorage E, 'Ao Chalong Lam'), about 13 nm from Haad Rin Nai. The Pilot gives only the position, so sound in and choose sand clear of the fishing fleet's moorings. The bay is open to the north, so it rolls in NE-monsoon surges (Nov–Jan); it is best in the SW monsoon and settled weather. The village pier (Chaloklum Pier, OpenStreetMap) is busy with fishing boats and longtail taxis. Ashore: a 7-Eleven, ATMs, a Lotus's go fresh (6am–midnight, OpenStreetMap), a bakery, Thai markets and roadside fruit stalls (Wikivoyage). Several dive centres here run daily trips to Sail Rock.

Best for

Sheltered north-coast base for Sail Rock and Bottle Beach

Season

Best May–Oct (SW monsoon) and settled weather; open to N/NE
