Leper Colony Ruins (Curieuse)

4° 17.4′ S · 55° 43.2′ E · approximate

Stone ruins of the leprosarium on the shore of Anse José — Curieuse quarantined leprosy sufferers for roughly a century (the SPGA leaflet dates it 1803–1965), an isolation that helped protect the island's forest.

Practical

Open-air ruins along the Anse José shore next to the Doctor's House; free with park entry. Fragile walls — don't climb on them. Sources disagree on the start date (SPGA leaflet 1803, English Wikipedia 1829, French Wikipedia 1883); all agree it closed in 1965. Coordinate approx: read off the SPGA/park signboard map of Curieuse (Wikimedia Commons CurieuseMap.jpg, 1 km scale bar) georeferenced to geotagged Commons photos at Anse Papaie and the mangrove boardwalk; expect +/-150 m.
