Anse José (Curieuse) anchorage

4° 17.5′ S · 55° 43.3′ E · approximate

The south-facing beach at the foot of Curieuse's western hills, where the restored 1873 Doctor's House and the leprosarium ruins sit under the takamaka trees — the second Curieuse anchorage and the far end of the mangrove walk from Baie Laraie.

Practical

Named by the Moorings 2024 eGuide as one of two Curieuse anchorages (no mooring buoys listed); the park signboard map marks anchoring and mooring symbols off Anse St José. Faces south across the Curieuse channel to Praslin, so it is most comfortable in the NW monsoon and uncomfortable when the SE trades push swell into the channel. Same park rules and fees as Baie Laraie (Rs300 per non-resident over 12, card only; Rs250 per yacht overnight mooring, SPGA). Anchor on sand only, not coral. Land the dinghy on the beach; the boardwalk trail to Baie Laraie starts behind it. Coordinate approx: read off the SPGA/park signboard map of Curieuse (Wikimedia Commons CurieuseMap.jpg, 1 km scale bar) georeferenced to geotagged Commons photos at Anse Papaie and the mangrove boardwalk; expect +/-150 m.
