Summer Chubascos
28° 30.0′ N · 112° 30.0′ W · approximate
Sudden, violent summer thunderstorm squalls — chubascos — that can bring winds up to 90 mph and torrential rain within the hour, typically on the hottest days from May through October.
Practical
Coordinate is approximate (mid northern Gulf). Watch afternoon/evening cloud build-up over the mountains; anchor with all-round protection or in a hurricane hole (Puerto Don Juan) when storms are forecast, set plenty of scope, stow canvas and lift the dinghy. Local 'westies' at Bahía de los Ángeles can jump from calm to 50+ kn in minutes.
