Isla San Lorenzo East Roadstead (Jack's Crack)

28° 37.3′ N · 112° 47.1′ W · approximate

An open roadstead below the cleft known as Jack's Crack on the long, steep, uninhabited island of San Lorenzo — the first island stop on the classic Midriff crossing from San Francisquito to Kino.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: on the east (Gulf) side of the island off the OpenStreetMap coastline; The Log names the spot but gives no position, so locate the crack visually and sound in. The Log: anchor below Jack's Crack, an open roadstead still within sight of San Francisquito; Isla San Esteban is the next stop, about 10 miles east. The Canal de Salsipuedes on the west side is the steepest, deepest stretch of the Sea of Cortez (about 4,200 ft) with strong currents — plan crossings with the tide. Open roadstead: settled weather only, and leave if a westerly or norther builds. San Lorenzo is about 7 km long, rises to about 460 m (Wikipedia; Spanish Wikipedia gives about 303 m), has no water or people, and is part of a national park and the Gulf of California islands reserve — no landing without a CONANP permit. It is home to the endemic San Lorenzo Island rattlesnake.
