Isla San Pedro Mártir Seabird Colony

28° 22.8′ N · 112° 18.4′ W

The most remote island in the Gulf, wrapped in a perpetual cloud of seabirds — the world's largest nesting colonies of brown and blue-footed boobies, giant cardón cacti and a ring of sea lion rookeries.

Practical

San Pedro Mártir Biosphere Reserve (2002) and UNESCO site. Landing is now forbidden. Near-vertical sides leave only questionable fair-weather anchorages in two places — plan this as a daytime visit from the boat in settled conditions. About 51 km from Baja and 53 km from Sonora, 60 km from Bahía Kino. Strong midriff currents.

Best for

Bird and sea lion watching on a mid-Gulf crossing

Season

Settled weather only
