Punta Colorada Snorkel (Isla San José)

25° 1.8′ N · 110° 35.1′ W · approximate

Snorkel the base of the red sandstone cliffs at Punta Colorada: yellow-tailed surgeonfish, big bass under the overhangs, sea fans, pufferfish, sea stars and cucumbers.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: off the cliffs east of the GeoNames point, about 400 m from the OpenStreetMap coastline—swim in close to the cliff base from the dinghy. Lindblad guests snorkeled 'at the base of the cliff' (2018) and saw 'pufferfish and sea fans' (2025); a Baja Bound kayak trip reported surgeonfish schools and large bass under the overhangs. Dolphins and leaping mobula rays are common offshore in spring. Calm conditions only—swell breaks on the rocks. Inside the Islas del Golfo de California flora-and-fauna protected area (CONANP): rangers can ask to see a park pass; the annual Conservation Passport (MX$3,620 in 2025) or a day bracelet covers it.
