Punta Colorada North Coves (Isla San José)

25° 2.1′ N · 110° 35.6′ W · approximate

Red sandstone cliffs and several small coves at Isla San José's north-east tip—good overnight anchorages 'for anything but wind from the east', with an arroyo to hike and fossil-hunting on the beach.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: about 110 m off the north side of the GeoNames 'Punta Colorada' point (25.0312, -110.59006), checked in-water against the OpenStreetMap coastline; the individual coves are not surveyed—enter in good light and sound in. A Baja Nomad poster (2019) has anchored overnight in the north-end coves; twice honey bees came aboard in late afternoon looking for fresh water—cover up and wait for dark. He uses them as a jump-off for Las Ánimas, about 8 miles away, at first light. Untenable in easterlies; open to the Gulf. Ashore: sandstone cliffs, whale fossils on the beach and an arroyo that turns green after rain (Lindblad). No services. Inside the Islas del Golfo de California flora-and-fauna protected area (CONANP): rangers can ask to see a park pass; the annual Conservation Passport (MX$3,620 in 2025) or a day bracelet covers it.
