San Evaristo Anchorage

24° 54.7′ N · 110° 42.2′ W · approximate

A small, very secure bay at the foot of the Sierra de la Giganta, home to a fishing village of about 40 people—the first real shelter north of La Paz and the usual staging stop for boats heading up or down the Sea.

Practical

Coordinate is the GeoNames 'Bahía el Puerto' point at San Evaristo (checked in-water against the OpenStreetMap coastline), used as an approximate anchorage position. Sheltered from everything but an easterly, and Isla San José four miles off takes the edge off that (Latitude 38). Sand, good holding; lay out real scope—on the night of February 27, 2020 a charter Bali 45 dragged in a strong northerly onto the reef off Punta San Romualdo on the south side of the entrance and sat on the rocks for four days, while the La Paz port captain had closed the port. The smaller inner bay gets tight in season; arrive in daylight. Do not anchor over the desalination plant's intake. Water can be bought from the plant manager (slowly); small tienda in the pink house above the plant; Maggie and Lupe's palapa serves the catch of the day. A little cell signal reaches the bay.
