Isla Coronado Beach and Volcano Hike

26° 7.3′ N · 111° 16.4′ W · approximate

El Volcán: a steep climb over loose angular boulders to the top of Coronados' dormant volcano (about 850 ft) for 360-degree views of Isla Carmen and the Sierra de la Giganta, past fossil shells from an ancient sea.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: the summit area of the island. Loreto.com rates it moderate-strenuous: 3.9 km out and back, 200 m gain, about 2 hours 15 minutes, following cairns from the beach; SAIL's crew took three hours for three miles because of the footing. Easier options from the same beach: the Atracadero and Ensenada Blanca trails (2.8 km, flat) through dunes to a small mangrove. Go early, wear boots, carry 2 litres each.

Best for

A summit with the whole park at your feet
