Palmetto Point

17° 34.9′ N · 61° 51.5′ W

The low south-west headland of Barbuda, where the west and south coasts meet below the lagoon. It is part of the Ramsar wetland, a nesting area for frigatebirds and leatherback turtles, and in the right swell a surf break.

Practical

Coordinate verified from Wikipedia. Doyle's rounding waypoint is LBAU01, 0.9 nm south of Palmetto Point (N17 34.0 W061 51.5). Round outside it when sailing between the south-coast anchorages and Low Bay, and keep outside Codrington Shoals and the 9-ft bank. Beach access by land has become difficult because the Barbuda Ocean Club has fenced the area for a golf course. The foreshore below high water remains public. Barbudaful says Palmetto Point gets huge swells at certain times and is a favourite with surfers. Leatherback turtles nest here, so avoid lights and disturbance on the beach at night.
