Martello Tower Anchorage (River Beach)

17° 35.3′ N · 61° 50.0′ W · approximate

Open-roadstead anchoring off River Beach below the 56-ft Martello Tower. It is the closest south-coast spot to the ferry wharf and the road into Codrington.

Practical

Coordinate approx: placed about 400 m south-west of the tower (OpenStreetMap shows the tower at N17 35.71 W061 49.76 and the shoreline about 250 m to its south). The Antigua & Barbuda Marine Guide says there is an anchorage just off the tower, but it is better to the south-west of it. When running west from Coco Point to the tower, give Spanish Well Point a wide berth to avoid its offshore coral. Barbudaful notes that it is fairly easy to land a dinghy on River Beach toward the tower, and closer to the village than the other south-coast anchorages. River Wharf itself is small and busy with ferries, container traffic and fishing boats, so keep clear of it. Swell from the south or west makes it uncomfortable.
