Landmark· Corfu· Greece — Ionian, Saronic & Argolic

Old Fortress of Corfu

39° 37.4′ N · 19° 55.8′ E

The Venetian citadel on the twin-peaked promontory that gave Corfu its western name, cut off from town by the Contrafossa sea moat and never taken in the Ottoman sieges of 1537, 1571 and 1716. Climb to the lighthouse on the upper peak for a view over Mandraki, Garitsa Bay and the Albanian mountains.

Practical

Walk in over the bridge from the Spianada; Mandraki harbour is inside the walls. Inside: the Doric-style Anglican Church of St George (1840), barracks, a former military hospital now used by the music school, and a historical archive and Byzantine collection near the main gate (Greeka). Entry is ticketed; check current hours locally. The Contrafossa moat links the Gulf of Kerkyra to Garitsa Bay and is used by small local boats.
