Acheron Springs (Glyki)

39° 19.7′ N · 20° 37.3′ E

Upstream near the village of Glyki, the Acheron's cold, clear springs pour out at the foot of a gorge, where a marked path follows the river into the canyon.

Practical

Coordinate is the OSM 'Springs of Acheron' node. OSM maps the Acheron springs path (39.32789N 20.62275E), a car park at the gorge (39.32774N 20.61847E), the old Acheron bridge ruins, and paths from Glyki towards Souli. Wikipedia: Glyki (ancient Euroea) takes its name from the Acheron's ancient estuary, the 'sweet port'. It is about 16 km inland from Ammoudia in a straight line (further by road): go by taxi or hire car. Avoid the gorge after heavy rain.

Best for

A cool inland river walk on a hot day

Season

Late spring to autumn; avoid after heavy rain
