Ammoudia & Acheron River Mouth

39° 14.1′ N · 20° 28.9′ E

The Acheron, the mythical river of the underworld, meets the sea at the fishing village of Ammoudia. You can anchor off the beach, take the dinghy upriver past the tavernas, and go on to the Necromanteion and the Acheron springs.

Practical

Anchor off the river mouth in 4-6 m over mud and sand (mySea, 39.23948N 20.47681E); open to W and S. The tavernas just inside the river entrance are reachable by dinghy (mySea). The quay inside the river is 1-1.5 m deep, too shallow for yachts but fine for dinghies (this position). The river carries a current and silt, so watch for shifting bars at the mouth. Another anchorage about 1.8 nm south has 4-6 m over sand with good holding (mySea, 39.21049N 20.49140E). Wikipedia: the river is 52 km long and flows into the Ionian at Ammoudia. Necromanteion: about 4.5 km east of Ammoudia, by taxi.
