Agios Ioannis Bay (Parga coast)

39° 16.0′ N · 20° 28.0′ E

A deep bay about half a mile across, east of Lichnos and 2 nm north of Ammoudia. The French pilot Plaisance Pratique calls it probably the best anchorage on this stretch of coast.

Practical

Position is the approach waypoint from Plaisance Pratique (39 16.01N 020 28.03E). Well sheltered from N, E and W but open to the south and untenable in SW-SE winds; in westerlies the swell wraps round the cape, so tuck well into the western end. There are three spots. Off the beach and its taverna in the NW there is little room, in 3-5 m. North of the bay, east of the beach, you anchor in 6-8 m on sand patches in weed with good holding. In the steep-sided NW cove you must take lines ashore; a former fish farm may have left ground tackle on the bottom, and Rod Heikell advises a tripping line. Heikell names it the fallback when swell makes Ammoudia untenable. No services and no mobile signal reported in the bay.

Best for

The best-protected overnight anchorage near Parga in the summer NW wind
