Necromanteion of Ephyra
39° 14.2′ N · 20° 32.1′ E
On a hill above the Acheron valley stand the massive stone walls and vaulted crypt that excavator Sotirios Dakaris identified as the Oracle of the Dead. Homer's Odysseus came here to consult the shades, and Herodotus describes the oracle.
Practical
Wikipedia: excavated in 1958-64 and 1976-77. Many archaeologists now think the late-4th-century BC building was a fortified Hellenistic farmhouse (catapult parts were found), burned by the Romans in 167 BC, but the crypt and the myth remain compelling. It is about 4.5 km east of Ammoudia; take a taxi from Ammoudia or Parga. Opening hours and tickets are not confirmed in these sources.
