Agios Stefanos Basilica & Kastri Islet (Kos)
36° 45.2′ N · 26° 59.3′ E
The mosaic-floored ruins of two early Christian basilicas (469 and 554 AD) stand on the beach facing Kastri, a volcanic islet crowned by the white chapel of Agios Nikolaos: the postcard view of Kamari Bay.
Practical
Discovered in 1932 by the Italian archaeologist Luciano Laurenzi (Greek Wikipedia). Kastri islet (36.7497 N, 26.9880 E) sits just off the beach at the north end of Kamari Bay; locally the anchorage under it is called 'Palaiokastro' (Sailing Issues). Dinghy in from Kamari Bay or anchor off in settled weather. Swimming out to the islet is popular, but no source used here describes the snorkelling, so judge conditions yourself.
