Kastri Islet Anchorage (Agios Stefanos, Kefalos Bay)

36° 45.0′ N · 26° 59.1′ E · approximate

The postcard anchorage of south-west Kos: turquoise water between the beach below the ruined early Christian basilica of Agios Stefanos and the volcanic islet of Kastri with its little white chapel of Agios Nikolaos. Sailing Issues notes that 'Palaiokastro' is the local name for the anchorage under Kastri.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: placed in the water roughly midway between the Agios Stefanos beach outline (OSM way 169705029) and Kastri islet (OSM coastline way 71527250), about 200 m off each; check your depth. This is the northern corner of Kamari (Kamares) Bay, so it shares that bay's conditions: sand with patches of weed, good holding; protected from N to E, exposed to S and SW; short, not very strong downbursts in a meltemi (mySea Kamari anchorage). Sailing Issues: the bay is shallow in the north and deep in the south, so expect less water here than off Kamari port. Yellow buoys mark swimming zones closer in (ActiveCaptain Kamares Bay); keep the anchor and the dinghy outside them. For the night, or more room, drop back to the main Kamari Bay anchorage off the port (see separate entry); water is available at the foot of the Kamari mole and the Cavos taverna is on the beach just north of the port.
