Makronisos Political Prison Camp Remains
37° 42.1′ N · 24° 7.5′ E
From the Civil War until 1974, Makronisos was a notorious prison and 're-education' camp for political prisoners, including composer Mikis Theodorakis and poet Yannis Ritsos. Its remains are a protected monument.
Practical
The island is about 13 km by 2.5 km and rises to 281 m. It was declared a Civil War-era monument and, in 2019, an archaeological site, so original structures are protected. Visiting and landing rules were not verified; ask the Lavrio port police before landing. The coordinate is the island centroid from Wikipedia, not a specific building.
