Makronisos West Coast Lee Anchorage
37° 42.3′ N · 24° 6.0′ E · approximate
Makronisos is a long, bare, uninhabited island 4 nm across the channel from Lavrio. Its remote western bays are a popular day sail from the charter bases, with clear water and nobody ashore.
Practical
Barbaros recommends the western bays as a day sail. Greek Wikipedia names bays at Agkaliastro, Gerolymniona and Mavria (coast not stated), and a large sea cave at Katazygia. No services of any kind. The west coast faces Lavrio and the channel, so it is a lee from easterlies, but it is open to the north in a meltemi. Depths and holding were not verified, so sound in and anchor on sand clear of rocks. The whole island was declared an archaeological site in 2019, so check locally before landing. Coordinate is approximate: a point in the Lavrio–Makronisos channel off the island's central west coast. Expect ferry traffic in the channel.
Best for
A lunch stop with a swim on the first or last day out of Lavrio
Season
Day stop in settled weather; exposed in N–NE meltemi
