Kauehi NW (Airport) Anchorage

15° 46.8′ S · 145° 8.6′ W

The locals' storm anchorage off the north rim of Kauehi, by the airstrip and the guesthouse. Advised by village elders when the wind is forecast to box the compass.

Practical

Position from Jacaranda (April 2019), who got the advice from several locals, including Hieti, a retired FP cargo-ship captain: when the wind is forecast to go 'around the clock', anchor by the airport near the pension. It gives protection from winds between 235° and 080° (SW through N to E). It is open to the SE-S quadrant across the lagoon. Depth and bottom were not recorded; anchor on sand and float your chain. The 2019 government atoll sheet lists an airport landing (débarcadère) with 20 m of berthing and 2 m depth, a handy dinghy landing. A concrete road runs from the airport to Tearavero. OpenStreetMap shows the Kauehi Lodge guesthouse bungalows on the shore here.
