Río Diablo Dinghy Trip & Fresh Water
9° 26.4′ N · 78° 35.2′ W · approximate
A dinghy run up the shallow, mangrove-lined Río Diablo behind Nargana for a freshwater swim, birdlife and jungle; the mainland rivers are also where Guna villages draw their water.
Practical
Coordinate approximate: the river mouth on the mainland just south of the Nargana anchorage; follow the channel the local canoes use. Noforeignland describes it as a shallow freshwater river trip through mangroves with swimming and birdlife. Go at higher water and slowly; outboard props find the bottom. Village water is piped untreated from mainland rivers, so treat any water you take on (Wikivoyage). For tank water, cruisers have filled at the dock in Río Azúcar, a village near Nargana (Noonsite 2016). In eastern Guna Yala, going up rivers without permission or a guide can bring a $200+ fine (Ustupu, 2018), so ask first.
