Monte Cristi Bay Anchorage

19° 55.5′ N · 71° 38.0′ W

A mile-wide, clean-water bay under the flat-topped El Morro headland at the DR's northwest corner. The Virgintino guide rates it one of the country's hidden secrets and recommends it as a gentler arrival from the Turks & Caicos than beating to Luperón.

Practical

Waypoint from the Virgintino DR guide (~2015). About 9 ft almost everywhere except a small shallow patch in the middle; favor the SE corner for dinghy access and keep about a quarter mile off. Protected from all but NW winds. Clean water means you can swim and run a watermaker. Dinghy along a marked channel and under a small bridge to the sport-fishing club, which serves inexpensive local meals and will call officials if you want to clear in (you pay only the taxi). The town is about 2 miles inland, and 3 miles of mangrove canal lead to the beach at El Morro. Carnival in February around Independence Day (February 27th).

Best for

A quiet, clean-water landfall from the Turks & Caicos
