Black River Anchorage

18° 0.4′ N · 77° 54.0′ W

The mouth of Jamaica's longest river, a molasses-dark tannin river with over 100 bird species and the island's largest crocodile population. Boat tours run upriver.

Practical

Position is Virgintino's waypoint NW of Ravient Reef at the buoy (18 00.40N, 077 54.00W). A bridge at the river mouth blocks sailboats; there is a dock at the mouth with 8 ft, otherwise anchor in Black River Bay (reasonably protected, good holding) and dinghy in. Go midday to see crocodiles, later for birds; bring repellent. YS Falls is nearby. Black River was badly damaged by Hurricane Melissa's storm surge in October 2025 (Wikipedia: about 90% of homes lost roofs), so expect limited services.
