Jumentos bull sharks (spearfishing caution)

22° 53.0′ N · 75° 52.2′ W · approximate

Bull sharks are a fact of life in the Jumentos and Raggeds, drawn by the fishing smacks that clean catch at the anchorages and by cruisers' spearfishing.

Practical

Coordinate approx: pinned at Flamingo Cay Two Palms, where noforeignland and ActiveCaptain reviewers report frequent and sometimes aggressive sharks; reports also come from Water Cay, Buenavista, Low Water Harbour, Double Breasted and the Between the Raggeds reef. Rules of thumb from these reports: always snorkel and spear with a buddy; get speared fish out of the water and into the dinghy at once; carry a pole spear or stick to fend off curious sharks; never clean fish at the boat or swim at night; leave the water if a shark keeps coming back.

Best for

Staying safe while snorkelling and spearfishing
